Met-Con Contributes to Critical Infrastructure at Kennedy Space Center
Met-Con is proud to have played a key role in a historic infrastructure project at Kennedy Space Center, supporting NASA's continued mission of innovation, exploration, and spaceflight advancement.
As part of the New Main Flame Deflector (MFD) project, Met-Con partnered with COMET Construction Services and other project stakeholders to help deliver critical structural steel and specialty construction services that will support future launches from one of the world's most iconic spaceports.
Precision Steel Work for a Mission-Critical Project
The Main Flame Deflector is an essential component of launch infrastructure, designed to withstand and redirect the intense heat, flames, and acoustic energy generated during rocket launches. The replacement and modernization of this structure required exceptional planning, precision, and execution.
Met-Con's scope of work included:
- Drilling more than 600 holes in the backup steel structure
- Blasting and painting structural components
- Fabricating and installing cladding plates and protective fencing
- Coordinating complex lifting and installation operations
- Supporting the integration of critical steel components onto the new Main Flame Deflector
Combined, the steel plates and fencing installed on the project weighed more than 150.8 tons, demonstrating the scale and complexity of the work performed.
Expertise in Structural Steel Fabrication and Installation
Projects of this magnitude require a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting demanding quality, safety, and schedule requirements. Met-Con's experienced team delivered precision craftsmanship throughout every phase of the project, from preparation and coating to installation and final assembly.
The successful completion of this work highlights Met-Con's capabilities in:
- Structural steel fabrication
- Steel erection and installation
- Industrial construction projects
- Heavy lifting and rigging coordination
- Protective coatings and surface preparation
- Mission-critical infrastructure support
Supporting the Future of Space Exploration
The modernization of launch infrastructure at Kennedy Space Center helps ensure the facility remains ready to support the next generation of space missions. Met-Con is honored to contribute to projects that advance technology, strengthen critical infrastructure, and support America's leadership in space exploration.
We extend our appreciation to NASA and COMET Construction Services for recognizing the project and the collaborative effort required to bring it to completion.
